Debates

Debate is an essential part of the academic and cultural environment of the college, designed to promote critical thinking, confident communication, and a deep understanding of contemporary social and legal issues. Recognizing that the legal profession demands not only knowledge of the law but also the ability to argue, reason, and persuade effectively, the college actively encourages students to participate in debate activities. Debate provides a platform for students to express their opinions, challenge opposing viewpoints, and develop logical arguments in a respectful and constructive manner. Through debating, students learn to listen critically, think on their feet, and respond intelligently—skills that are indispensable for aspiring lawyers, judges, policymakers, and leaders

The college promotes a vibrant debating culture through the Debate and Literary Society, which regularly organizes intra-college debate competitions, group discussions, panel talks, and inter-college events. Topics for debates are drawn from a wide range of issues, including constitutional law, human rights, current affairs, politics, gender justice, environmental concerns, and ethics. This allows students to not only stay informed but also develop a well-rounded perspective on pressing issues affecting society. Debates may be conducted in various formats—Oxford style, Lincoln-Douglas, parliamentary, or conventional one-on-one formats—to give students exposure to different modes of argumentation and analysis.

To nurture talent and guide students, the college conducts regular debate training sessions and workshops on argument construction, rebuttal techniques, voice modulation, body language, and time management. Experienced faculty members and guest speakers are Invited to share techniques and provide feedback, helping students improve their performance. Newcomers are welcomed through orientation programs, and team-based debates are often organized to foster collaboration and peer learning. These activities are open to students from all years and academic backgrounds, encouraging diversity of thought and inclusiveness.

The college also prepares and sends selected students to represent the institution in state-level and national-level debate competitions, offering them exposure to broader audiences and competitive environments. Participation in external debates boosts confidence, enhances the reputation of the college, and provides students with opportunities to interact with peers from other institutions, legal professionals, and public figures. Certificates, awards, and recognitions are given to outstanding debaters to encourage continued participation and excellence.

Debating not only enhances communication and analytical skills but also builds leadership, empathy, and civic awareness. It helps students understand both sides of an issue, appreciate different perspectives, and develop the ability to defend their views logically and respectfully. Debate also complements other academic and co-curricular activities like moot court, legal aid, and seminars by preparing students to think critically and speak convincingly. In its early years, the college has already laid the foundation for a strong debating tradition and is committed to making it a regular and celebrated part of campus life. As the institution grows, it aims to host annual inter-college debate festivals and collaborate with other universities and organizations to promote intellectual dialogue and democratic values.
